Patient
Education - Occlusion
Occlusion is how your teeth come or bite together when you
close your jaw. Your occlusion may be different when you are
tilted back or lying down on your side. Balanced occlusion
is important after fillings or crowns and bridges. Your dentist
will check that your bite is even on either side before you
leave the dental chair.
Often occlusion is difficult to determine when a patient has
received local anaesthetic. This is because the patient often
can't feel if they are biting correctly. It is important to
inform you dentist if the occlusion of your teeth feels higher
on one side of your mouth or if you're feeling pain when you
bite together. You may need an adjustment on the filling,
crown or bridge.
